The 2011 British Showjumping Scholarship for the highest placed British bred or domiciled mare has been awarded to Dazzle II, the 11 year old grey mare is owned by John Whitaker and Mandy Hall. 

Dazzle II finished 2011 with a fantastic win at Olympia in the H&M Ivy Stakes ridden by John.

Throughout the day demonstrations will be taking place on both the stallion and mare yard, and there will be time for you to speak to our resident vets. 

Twemlows Stud Farm is a family run business, run by Richard Matson and Edward Matson, it has become one of the leading UK artificial insemination and embryo transfer centres,  with over 300 mares passing through Twemlows each season.  Take this opprotunity to have a walk around our facilities, talk to the vets and see what we have to offer. 

Stallion AI Services (SAIS) is the leading UK semen collection centre, boasting the latest technology in their laboratory, they offer a wide range of services including semen freezing and storage, fertility testing, fresh and chilled semen distribution.  SAIS is owned and managed by Tullis Matson who has been successfully practising AI for over 18 years and has collected from over 600 stallions.  Come along and meet the stallions, and talk with their owners.  

All money raised at the refreshment stand will be donated to The National Foaling Bank.

All other mares will still require a strangles blood test prior to arrival.

As of the 5th December, part of the recipient herd here at Twemlows were placed under lights this is to encourage them to come into season earlier than their natural cycle.

Breeders wishing for an early foal in 2013 can also do a little extra preparation to be ready for the stud season.
A mares reproductive activity is seasonally dependant; the natural breeding season lasts from early spring until late summer.  Ovulation in a mare over winter is minimal or absent and over the summer period is at it’s optimum.  Over the spring and autumn period the oestrus cycle can become irregular this is considered to be the transitional period.

Horses are known as “long-day breeders” this means that their normal cyclic activity is primarily activated by an increase in the length of daylight in early spring and secondly by an increase in temperature and a higher dietary profile.

Artificial lighting is used to advance the onset of the breeding season, and this is still the most reliable way.
Artificial light is added at the end of the day to provide a total of 14-16 hours of light daily, this results in your mare cycling 60 to 75 days later.  If you are wishing to start breeding with your mare in early February it is recommended that you start your light regime around early December.

The lighting in the stable must be bright enough to read a newspaper easily in every corner. Good stable lighting should be sufficent.

We’ve had a busy week of courses here at Twemlows Stud Farm; Foaling the Mare on Saturday and Foal and Yearling Management on Sunday. Thank you to all involved for making it an interesting and informative couple of days.
