AI Technicians Training Courses

Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) approved course in conjunction with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).

Following The Veterinary Surgery (Artificial Insemination of Mares) Order 2010 that came into force 14th September 2010 (which allows people other than veterinarians to inseminate equines) the two-day courses were introduced in conjunction with DEFRA and the RCVS to ensure horse welfare and the successful development of equine artificial insemination.

 

Mare AI Course Dates 

               Course Fee: £420 (inc VAT)               

19th & 21st March 2024   

 

The course is designed for owners/managers of studs/stallions, breeders and veterinarians with an interest in artificial insemination. Delegates are assessed throughout the one day course which includes a practical and a short written test paper. Successful delegates are awarded a:

CERTIFICATE OF COMPETENCE IN ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION OF EQUINES

The course covers the following areas – lecture room  & practical sessions:

  • Anatomy of the Mare
  • Care of Mare Before & After Insemination
  • Artificial Insemination
  • Ethics & Record Keeping
  • Health procedures and Biosecurity

 

The course is delivered by a team of professional experienced lecturers in AI John Spencer MRCVS and Monica Morganti MRCVS.

Maximum number of delegates on each course is 10 ensuring high quality interaction between lecturers and delegates. Knowledge and experience of horses is important before considering this course.

The course fee covers one full days tuition with both written and practical examinations, a comprehensive course folder with notes for future reference as well as the course itself, all course materials and refreshments during the day. The course starts at 08.30am each day and finishes at approximately 17.30pm.

Please note that a minimum of two years knowledge and experience of handling horses is required and DEFRA only issues certificates to persons over the age of 18 years.

Successful candidates will be competent in AI procedures but only continued experience will make them proficient.

 

Stallion  Collection Course Dates 

Course Fee: £420 (inc VAT)

20th March 2024

 

The course is designed for owners/managers of studs/stallions, breeders and veterinarians with an interest in artificial insemination. This one day course gives a greater insight to semen collection and analysis.

  • Setting up a collection unit
  • Stallion handling
  • Stallion training onto a dummy mare
  • Semen collection
  • Semen handling, fresh & chilled
  • Semen assessment
  • Semen dilution
  • Semen packaging
  • Record keeping

The course fee covers one full days tuition and all course materials and refreshments during the day. The course starts at 08.30am and finishes at approximately 17.30pm.
