Dystocia in the Mare & Foal Resuscitation

A hands on one-day practical course on the complexities of mare dystocia and

basic training in foal resuscitation, led by experts in the field and stud management

 

Course date:  Monday 23rd March 2026

 

 

Subjects covered include:

  • Complications of mid to late term pregnancy
  • Straight forward foalings to recognising the signs of dystocia 
  • Decision masking on if and when to call your vet
  • What can be done prior to vet arrival
  • Knowledge and skills needed to handle a variety of scenarios, including practical sessions with models and phantom mares
  • Principles of Caesarean Section and Fetotomy
  • Basic training in foal resuscitation including Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and first aid

This course is designed for experienced breeders who have a good knowledge of normal foalings.  There will be use of cadaver material in the practical sessions.

 

Please bring clean overalls and sturdy boots for the practical sessions.

 

Course notes will be provided and there will be refreshments available throughout the day, including a buffet lunch.  Please advise any special dietary requirements when booking.

 

The day starts at 9.00am for coffee and registration, with lectures beginning at 9.15am. The course will aim to finish at 17.00pm with a tour of the facilities.
